An Ideal Location in the Heart of the Hautes-Pyrénées

While Lourdes is world-famous for its Sanctuary, the town also enjoys an exceptional location at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Situated between the plains and the mountains, it is one of the best starting points for exploring the region’s most remarkable natural sites.

Within less than an hour’s drive, visitors can reach spectacular landscapes including glacial cirques, mountain lakes, waterfalls, legendary Tour de France mountain passes, and beautifully preserved mountain villages.

This privileged location makes it easy to combine cultural visits, the discovery of religious heritage, and unforgettable escapes into nature.

The Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage Gem

Cirque de Gavarnie et sa cascadeAmong the must-see sites of the Pyrenees, the Cirque de Gavarnie holds a special place. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this immense natural amphitheatre is renowned for its exceptional dimensions and towering cliffs carved by ancient glaciers.

At the far end of the cirque flows the Grande Cascade de Gavarnie, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, with a drop of more than 400 metres.

From the village of Gavarnie, an accessible hiking trail leads visitors to the heart of the site, where they can fully appreciate this breathtaking landscape that notably inspired Victor Hugo.

Around 40 minutes from Lourdes, the Cauterets Valley is home to two of the most visited natural attractions in the Pyrenees: the Pont d’Espagne and Lake Gaube.

The Pont d’Espagne is a spectacular site where mountain streams and waterfalls flow through a beautifully preserved mountain forest. Several walking trails allow visitors to explore this remarkable natural setting with ease.

From the Pont d’Espagne, a pleasant walk leads to the famous Lake Gaube. Its turquoise waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating one of the most iconic and picturesque landscapes in the French Pyrenees.

Pic du Midi de Bigorre: A 360° Panoramic View

Terrasse panoramique du Pic du Midi de Bigorre

Rising to 2,877 metres above sea level, the Pic du Midi de Bigorre is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Pyrenees. Accessible by cable car from La Mongie, visitors can reach the summit in just a few minutes and enjoy breathtaking views across the entire Pyrenean mountain range.

The site is home to a world-renowned scientific observatory that has contributed to astronomical and meteorological research for more than 140 years. Today, the Pic du Midi and its observatory are involved in a bid for UNESCO World Heritage status, with an official application submitted and evaluation expected in the coming years.

However, the Pic du Midi is not only about science. Each summer, the summit becomes one of France’s most unique cultural venues. Intimate concerts are held against the stunning backdrop of the Pyrenees, nearly 3,000 metres above sea level. Renowned artists who have performed there include Murray Head, Christophe Willem, Zazie, Cali, Zaho de Sagazan, IAM, and Véronique Sanson. Attending a concert at sunset in such an extraordinary setting is an unforgettable experience.

Its panoramic terraces, the famous suspended skywalk overlooking the mountains, and a variety of astronomy-themed activities make the Pic du Midi an essential excursion during any stay in Lourdes.
